Message from the Novel "Anna's World" by Jostein Gaarder

“Anna's World” is a universal philosophy novel by Jostein Gaarder. This novel has a synopsis of “Earth 2082, Nova was very surprised when suddenly a letter from her great-grandmother, Anna appeared on her online terminal. A letter written 70 years ago, exactly on 12.12.12. Just when his great-grandmother was 16 years old like Nova today.

It's mysterious, how could it be that 70 years ago, her great-grandmother already knew that her great-grandson would be named Nova? And how did his great-grandmother know about Nova's worries? About the earth that is not as beautiful as it used to be, about extinct species, sinking lands, melting poles. And, is it true that the red-ruby ring from the legend of Aladin, is the key to restoring the balance of the earth? The ring that had been around Anna, her great-grandmother's finger?"

Anna's world has an interesting background, where we will be transported to the past, present, and future. The three times were packaged nicely to make us enjoy every story that was presented. In addition, this novel also has elements about humans and the universe.

Through this novel, Jostein Gaarder wants to bring his readers to see and reflect if the earth we live in is not doing well.

While reading this novel, the author wants to convey many messages about the existence of humans on this earth. For example, Gaarder describes in the future if the species that are successfully photographed will become a "photo fossil", that means a species that has been optically saved before becoming extinct along with the loss of their habitat.

"That is not true. What right does a man have to destroy other forms of life? What's wrong with humans?" That was the question that was in Anna. Maybe that's how other people feel too. Why do humans change or destroy nature, while we cannot live without the existing nature?

In reality “We are destroying our own planet. We have done it and we are doing it now.”

On page 164, Gaarder explains, “All flora and fauna are highly dependent on their respective habitats and when one part of nature is threatened, all other species that live in this ecosystem are also threatened.

What happens to these habitats has nothing to do with economics. Rich people do not miss every opportunity to continue to enrich themselves, for example by exploiting natural resources such as oil, coal, and minerals in these vulnerable areas. However, poverty is also the cause of ecosystems being exploited in unsustainable ways.

In general, humans are individualistic, self-centered, and playful creatures. Every effort to save humans and the earth that we have lived in, must pay attention to these characteristics."

There is an interesting sentence on page 172 which is “Will people really care about nature? Haven't we made this world such a great entertainment?

We live together on a planet, but not everyone can think in terms of the whole planet."
In addition to the message that Jostein Gaarder wants to convey, there are also words that can be a teaching for humans in general, “The climate crisis is not a conflict between nations. There are only one atmosphere and from outer space the boundaries of countries cannot be distinguished. Facing each other in this conflict are generations.”

The lesson we can learn from the novel Dunia Anna by Jostein Gaarder is that we humans should be able to live in harmony and side by side with nature because after all the earth and the universe were created not only for humans but also for other living things.
Save the earth save us
